Jain Living
”Jainism is the art of seeing, art of living, art of loving and the art of leaving.”
– Pujya Gurudevshri Rakeshbhai Jhaveri

Today Jainism is believed to be among the smallest of the major world religions. Founded by Lord Mahavira in the 6th century B.C., Jainism dwells on meditation, the sanctity of life and non-violence and propagates basic life principal in all objects.

Despite its ancient origins, Jainism has historically lacked visual tools to help others fully grasp its teachings. As a practising Jain myself, my Spiritual Mentor has taught be that Jainism is a way of seeing, a way of living. Every image, object, word, and action evokes an experience, sparking deeper inquiry into the true nature of things and the self. This perspective inspired Jain Living, my postgraduate project, which explores and introduces the core principles of Jainism—offering insights into the art of living purposefully each day.

IMPACT

This project consists of a series of typographic zine posters that visually represent the four fundamental principles of Jainism: Ahimsa (non-violence), Karma (cause and effect), Aparigraha (non-possession), and Anekantavada (non-absolutism). Each poster features a thought-provoking phrase that simplifies and personalizes these teachings. Complementary postcards were also created, designed to promote mental wellness.

News reports of violence—stabbings, shootings, political unrest, school brutality (BBC, 2019)—highlight a world increasingly detached from compassion and humanity. While this project initially aimed to raise awareness of Jainism, I now see its potential to be more than that. In a world full of negativity and violence, Jain Living serves as a reminder to reconnect with our peaceful, loving essence. Through it, we can rediscover the humanity within us all.
